Carrying your dog on a train. This is a question that pops up fairly often on online fora about the Indian Railways, and in this article, I try to simplify the process as well as provide links to blogs of other passengers who’ve successfully managed the process. In a nutshell, here are the rules regarding carriage of a dog in a train:

Dogs cannot be carried along with the passenger (you), unless you’re travelling by First AC Sleeper or First Class Non-AC and have an entire four-berth coupe or two-berth cabin to yourself. If you do not have the whole cabin to yourself, the dog can be carried in the coach only with the approval of fellow passengers. If you aren’t travelling by either of these classes, then the dog will have to travel in the dog box which is situated in the guard’s van of every train (barring Shatabdi, Rajdhani and Duronto Expresses).

It is the responsibility of the passenger to feed the dog and take it for short walks at stations where the train halts for a suitable amount of time. As you can imagine, very few dogs will take kindly to being placed in a small, dark box in a train for several hours, and your dog is likely to emerge from the experience severely traumatised.

If you can afford it, it is well worth the extra amount to travel First AC Sleeper or First Class Non-AC and have your dog travel with you. A luggage ticket must be purchased for your dog at the luggage office of your boarding station. As this might take a while, you should go early. If you’re booking two berths in First AC Sleeper or First Class Non-AC, it’s important that you are allotted a two-berth coupe. As this is not guaranteed, it is a good idea to meet the Chief Reservation Supervisor or Assistant Commercial Manager at your origin station and explain to him/her your need for a coupe. Carry a letter along with you that mentions your PNR number, date of journey, class of travel, and the fact that you’re carrying a dog with you.

Experience about train journey

I took my baby Puturani with me when I went to my hometown. For work purpose I stay at santiniketan and my home town is 30 Kms away, and just two stations far. Traveling in AC compartment is totally irrelevant in this case. At that time Putu was only 5 to 6months old. I preferred night local as it is less crowded usually. I went to station 40mins before the train arrival time , went to tte room , they were not so friendly n told me to go to parcel and luggage section. I went to parcel and luggage section and told about my need. They were surprised as if this was the first time they are listening to such issue. Whatever they told me to go to enquiry section, went there ,told the person sitting in enquiry that parcel b luggage section forwarded me to get a form from them. He was reluctant too..But somehow I convinced him showing Putu’s health card and told him that my baby is very well behaved and she never even barks at anybody. Though at that time Putu was seriously angry with the dogs of station premise and barking loudly ignoring all my commands and request. Getting confused by what he was told and what he saw,he gave a ticket form that is for ‘extra luggage’ . That ticket costs 50 rupees only. Snatching that ticket I took my baby in my arms and ran to the platform.

But 2nd time, around puja holidays I decided to take Putu home. She is quite grown up now, can’t give her a title of lapdog. Anyway again I went to tte room, they told me ,there is not a proper procedure to take pet along without AC compartment. I told them it is irrelevant as the distance is only 30 Kms. They told “u can’t take the dog with you, the dog can’t have a proper ticket” I told them, if there is not a proper procedure then what should I do ..I have to take her without ticket and if any tte comes n ask me about her ticket ,i’ll tell I couldn’t get a ticket from you. One of them told me, ‘is she dangerous?’ I replied ” no ,no, sheis friendly” to save my face, Putu gave that stuff a warm hug and wagging tail gesture. I understood, I HV to take her without ticket. I braced myself, got ready for any kind of confrontation and boarded the train . To my good luck ,there was no tte as it was a late night local

So here are the main points

1. First try to avail night locals or less crowded train

2. Feed your dog 1 hour before boarding. He or she gets time for poop n pee.

3. You better put a leash on your dog,it is mandatory

4. Go to tte section first, ask politely for assistance. If rejected, get a little bit stubborn and ask for help.

5. Try to buy ticket for extra luggage though it is not a proper ticket but at least you have paid for your pet’s journey.

6. There is another procedure of taking your dog in a local train or express train but in that case you have to put your dog in a cage and place him or her in guard’s compartment. That is pretty frightening for us. So you can try my procedure and be brave enough to face some controversy.

Hope this helps.
